Ganga Expressway: Route, Map, Features, Deadline, and Impact

The Ganga Expressway is a large-scale project where the construction of a greenfield expressway takes place in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The first stage of the Expressway links Bijauli village in the Meerut District to Judapur Dandu village in the Prayagraj District.

The project was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, on 29th April 2026. With the commencement of this expressway, the time taken to travel from Meerut to Prayagraj becomes only 6-7 hours.

The Ganga Expressway is a project of 594 kilometres of expressway that has been proposed by UPEIDA. The Ganga Expressway links Meerut in Western UP with Prayagraj (Allahabad) in Eastern UP.

Apart from this, the entire investment in the project would amount to approximately ₹36,230 to ₹40,000 crore. Hence, the Ganga Expressway would be the very first expressway ever to be built in just one state and among the longest expressways ever to have been built in India.

The route of this expressway covers 12 districts, which include Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj.

The following are the key features of the Ganga Expressway:

The long-awaited 594-kilometre-long Ganga Expressway has finally been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29, 2026. It is an extensive infrastructural facility that interlinks the various important locations of Uttar Pradesh. The route goes from Meerut to Prayagraj.

The Expressway has been inaugurated by the Prime Minister in the presence of the Governor of UP, Anandiben Patel, and the Chief Minister of UP, Yogi Adityanath. The opening of the fast-paced highway to the citizens would lead to a significant increase in connectivity in Uttar Pradesh.

It would not only be useful for individuals but also for logistics-related companies, agribusinesses, and commercial establishments. The Expressway will gain further momentum when the expressway from Hardoi is also made operational.

The Expressway is a six-lane highway that could be increased to eight lanes. It is the lifeline of the state of Uttar Pradesh. It not only links villages but also links farmers and youth.

It also acts as a means for development and linking different areas to each other. One good thing about it is its 3.5-kilometre-long emergency airstrip. This airstrip is situated in the district of Shahjahanpur. It has been constructed in such a manner that jets of the Indian Air Force can use it during any emergency.

It is geared towards making sure that there is development of the whole region in the corridor. There will also be an increase in infrastructure development along the Ganga Expressway corridor due to the domino effect of its development. The Expressway is a greenfield project, and this is because the project will be developed from scratch. It is expected to have six lanes, with capacity to expand to eight as needed. The total length of the project is 594 kilometres.

The design of this expressway has taken into account the presence of the Ganga River in such a way that the expressway can access all the districts of the region. The project is a greenfield one, and it will cost approximately 37,750 crores. The total length of this expressway is approximately 596 km.

The Ganga Expressway will link more than 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh state. More than 518 villages of Uttar Pradesh state will be part of the Expressway. The corridor is a highly significant, highly important corridor for connecting the Eastern UP and the Western UP of the state.

The connection of the Eastern and Western nodes will facilitate infrastructural and economic development of the entire corridor. It is expected to provide last-mile connectivity to rural areas of the Ganga River.

On the other hand, it will provide East-West connectivity, which will also help to create a development system facilitated by the expressway. The industrial and economic development of the districts under this corridor.

The Ganga Expressway project development itself is entirely done using the DBFOT model of PPP. The acronym DBFOT stands for Develop, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer, and it is a highly effective model for development used all over the world.

The project is being developed using the holistic approach for the overall development of the regions connected by it. The key characteristics of the Ganga Expressway include:

• There are going to be two toll plazas constructed, and there will be 15 ramp plazas proposed.
• Nine convenience complexes will be established that will consist of food courts, washrooms, and many other things.
• As of now, two bridges have been planned for the expressway. One is 960 m long, which will cross the Ganga River, and the other one is 720 m in length, which will span across the Ramganga River.
• In total, there will be 18 flyovers and eight roads over bridges built along the Ganga Expressway.
• Over 93% of the land necessary for the Ganga Expressway development has already been acquired.
• The selection of the bidder will be done for a period of 30 years.
• Industrial clusters shall be established at suitable locations along the Ganga Expressway.
• It will provide seamless connectivity linkages to the Purvanchal Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, and Agra-Lucknow Expressway.
• It will be linked to the Kailadevi temple of Sambhal.
• It will also decrease the distance between Meerut and Prayagraj. The trip that takes more than 11 hours will be covered in just 8 hours through this.
• It will help improve the socio-economic development, industry, trade, agriculture, and tourism in the area.
• The maximum speed limit that can be attained by the Ganga Expressway will be 120 km/h, and there will be two primary toll plazas.

Key Structures on the Ganga Expressway

The industrial zones have even been planned by the government of UP on all expressways, including the Expressway. The improvement in road quality and connectivity would become one of the major contributors to trade and transport between Meerut and Prayagraj.

As per the functioning of Ganga Expressway, the travel time from Meerut to Prayagraj will be reduced from 12 hours to 6-7 hours. This is because of the following reasons:
