Delhi Gurgaon Expressway Set for 3-Lane Elevated Corridor to Ease Traffic

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has come up with a plan to construct an elevated corridor with three lanes in one direction from the tunnel of the Dwarka Expressway, close to Shiv Murti, up to Ambience Mall Gurgaon , to ease the load on the highly travelled corridor from Mahipalpur to Ambience Mall, which falls within the jurisdiction of Gurugram.

As per the information provided by an official of NHAI, there is a plan of constructing an elevated corridor with a single-pier system starting from the right side of the tunnel of the Dwarka Expressway in the direction of Gurugram. At the moment, the plan is under consideration by the highway authority.

Thus, in simpler terms, the Dwarka Expressway will be provided its own exclusive three-lane pathway for this particular stretch and not join with the traffic of NH-48 straightaway.

The plan has been made keeping in view a single-pillar structure. This structure will stretch for approximately 2 km in length. The representatives from NHAI have stated that this plan is being considered seriously.

The issue is not just the number of lanes on NH-48. It is also about where vehicles are trying to go.

The section between Shiv Murti and the Haryana border is seeing very high traffic during peak hours. A recent traffic assessment found the road and its service roads operating at Level of Service F, which basically means the road is working beyond its comfortable capacity.

The numbers explain the pressure. The survey recorded around 1.2 lakh vehicles a day on one side of NH-8 and 1.6 lakh on the other. And then, we move to the Ambience Mall end.

An interesting thing about this proposal is that the traffic going through the Delhi-Gurgaon NH-48 will not move to the new elevated road. It will continue moving on the current four-lane carriageway.

The proposed elevated road is meant to accommodate traffic emerging from the Dwarka Expressway underpass. It implies that two streams of traffic which were interacting in one place would now stay separate from each other for some time.

There is yet another suggestion that may prove to be relevant to this entire corridor.

According to DLF, a six-lane flyover may be developed parallel to the city-bound service road between Ambience Mall and Cyber City. The motive behind such a suggestion is to boost the capacity of the service road and separate through traffic and traffic entering from the Ambience Mall side.

Thus, there will probably be two related changes:

• An elevated corridor with three lanes for traffic entering from the side of the Dwarka Expressway.
• Another flyover for the improvement of traffic from Ambience Mall to Cyber City.

These two changes could lead to a more organised traffic system rather than the construction of a single flyover.

It is significant for those who want to buy property in Gurgaon, especially if their travel involves the Delhi border, Ambience Mall, Cyber City or Udyog Vihar.

The reason behind it is that road connectivity is an important aspect in this area of Gurgaon. Many of its residents work in corporate belts around Cyber City, Udyog Vihar and commercial areas close to them.

There has been much office and commercial development in the NH-48 belt, while Dwarka Expressway has already emerged as an important corridor for residential development. The expressway continues to be monitored by real estate reports as one of the important residential markets in Gurgaon.

However, this is not an immediate reason to buy properties and expect price escalation.

It is important to note that the elevated corridor remains a proposal for now. There is no official information on its completion dates. Moreover, improved highway connectivity does not necessarily mean that all other problems concerning roads and service lanes will be sorted out as well.

Instead of using such information to justify your purchase of a flat in Gurgaon, you should focus on whether the property has proper access to the developed highways and roads.

For the time being, the three-lane elevated corridor has been proposed to be constructed.

It is not “one more flyover” for the commuter; the point would be to segregate the traffic on the Dwarka Expressway from the traffic on NH-48 at one of the most congested spots on the Delhi-Gurgaon corridor.

This could mean something in terms of reducing traffic congestion if both the projects come up as per plans.
